We have FINALLY started to hang art in our house, and it has made a HUGE difference. HUGE. It seriously feels like a brand new house. Art is definitely something that should be collected-- not just purchased all at once and thrown on the wall. As we start to hang pieces, I'm starting to see our personalities and our history emerge. It's just another another thing that makes me feel like... an adult.
I hope you guys are ready for one really easy/awesome/hilarious/maybe creepy DIY project!
To add a bit of pizzaz to our collage wall, I decided I wanted to make a traditional-looking silhouette to hang. I didn't really want to make one of myself or Jordan... I wanted to make one of Ollie.
My first step was to get a good profile shot of the dog. I sat on the couch with him one day and tried to snap some profile shots. Please enjoy a collage of outtakes!
I did find one photo in there! So I printed it out, and very carefully cut Ollie's head out. Since all of his wrinkles and head bumps really make this project look like your pup (instead of a blob,) I made sure to cut carefully and include all of his unique facial shapes.
Once the head is very carefully cut out (doesn't that sound creepy??) I used some light-colored washi tape to attach the photo to nice thick, black scrapbook paper. I think the washi tape worked great because it's not sticky enough to rip the paper when you're removing it, and it was light enough that I could still see through it.
The last few steps are really easy and quick.
Now that the photo is cut out and taped to our black scrapbook paper, you just need to cut it out one more time. Again, take care to be very thorough when cutting around all of the creases and bumps. I had to go back and augment a few things (his little nose bump, for example) to make it look defined on the silhouette.
Once your pet's head is now cut from the black paper, I used a photo-safe glue stick to attach the silhouette to cream-colored card stock that I cut to fit my frame.
That's it! Photo, cut, cut, glue, hang!
Doesn't our living room wall look so much cozier with our art hanging? I love it. I hope you go make a silhouette for all of your pets right now. Unless you think that's weird... if so, please disregard.
