This may be a fairly personal first post, but we're all friends here... RIGHT? I am a hopeless optimist. My high school superlative? Most Optimistic. I think optimism is the main reason why I love New Years Eve so dang much! Each year, no matter where I am and who I am with, I always feel a certain air of invincibility when the clock strikes twelve. Each year, without fail, I make a list of New Years resolutions. Each year, without fail, I don't cross anything off of my list. Not a single. damn. thing.
So here we are, 2013, and I'm over it.
I want to make goals for myself and stick to my guns. Instead of calling them "resolutions," we're going to think of them as attainable goals. Instead of criticizing myself for all of the things I could do better, 2013 is going to be the year that I become THE BEST VERSION OF MYSELF.
Without further ado, I present to you:
AB'S LIST OF GOALS THAT WILL LEAD TO BECOMING THE BEST VERSION OF HERSELF! (that's an okay title, right?)
1. Dress like an adult.
This should speak for itself. More often than not, I find myself wearing TOMs, pullover fleece jackets, and letting my hair do it's own thing. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of myself and think, "damn, Gina. You look kind of homeless today." The goal is to dress myself more thoughtfully and to update my wardrobe. I'm going to buy items that I love, just newer ones without holes.
2. Get my library card. Read more books!
That's right- I'm 25, going on 65! But really, I used to always have my nose in a book. I like that version of myself. So she's coming back! The goal is to read two books a month.
3. Surround myself with beautiful and useful things.
I'm a big fan of this William Morris quote: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
That being said, each room in our house is getting purged. I want to return to "bare bones" and only keep things we really, really love. That way, we can continue to "curate" our possessions as we purchase new things.
4. Buy good art. Hang it up.
We own some art, but almost none of it is hanging up. This needs to be remedied. Besides, nothing spices up the walls of a rental house than a whole bunch of cute prints.
5. Write thank you notes more often and in a more timely manner.
I want to send thank you notes EVERY time one is appropriate, not just when I remember. Someone did something thoughtful for me, so I will return the sentiment with a note.
6. Be a better friend.
There are lots of things I could say about this specific goal, but I will keep it simple by saying this: this year, I will make those that are important to me my priority.
7. Learn to bake bread, roast a chicken, make sausage.
The kitchen is my happy place, but there are some pretty "basic" things that I've just never done! Blooming yeast intimidates me and cooking a whole bird at one time is kind of scary, but these are things I really want to do. For Christmas, JB gave me the meat grinder attachment for my KitchenAid mixer, and I can't wait to use it!
8. Grow my collection of cookbooks.
I know just a few goals ago I talked about purging our house. That's still happening! But I adore cookbooks. They're useful AND beautiful. Win-win!
9. Go to more concerts.
A few on my list: The Shins, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes.
10. Give up dairy.
Recently, even the smallest amount of dairy will make be feel sick for days. I don't know if I will ever be able to cut it out completely (I JUST LOVE CHEESE AND FRO YO SO MUCH) but I'm going to try and adapt our meals to be mostly dairy-free.
These are just a few things off of my list. 2013 is going to be the year of happiness- I CAN FEEL IT!
